she belongs in a museum, and you are merely here to gaze. look around you, all the signs scream ‘do not touch’

Jean is sketching. More specifically, she’s sketching you. You’re a good figure, she tells you. You have more patience with me than anyone else and I like sketching you. Every time she says it, you feel heat flood your cheeks in response. She makes you so flustered so easily and you have no idea how to tell her or even how to respond. You’ve been in love with your best friend basically since you met her and in moments of quiet, like this one, that fact is echoing around your mind loudly enough that it drowns out everything else. 

Her long red hair falls like a curtain along her shoulder and she’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen and as she scrutinises her work, biting her lip absent mindedly, your chest is so tight you can hardly breathe. You want to kiss her. You want to tell her how you feel. You want so many things. Jean glances up at you from her sketchpad and gives you a brief, brilliant smile and you’re pretty sure your heart stops on the spot. You want to hold her and kiss her and love her but she is perfect and you are not and there are things that just can’t be. She looks back down at her paper and the moment passes. The tension in your chest eases slightly and you can breathe again. You want to tell her, but you stay silent. She doesn’t know you love her, and most of the time, you can live with that.
