You remembered it clearly, going through your mother’s things, looking for anything to keep, something to hold onto her by. He was going to pack it all up and stuff it into a storage container. You weren’t sure when you’d ever see her things again.

He would be getting home any minute with your sister and probably take out for dinner. You didn’t want to be caught like this.

You take a red leather-bound book and a pink scarf before bounding to your room and hiding them under your mattress, crossing your fingers that he wouldn’t notice it was missing.
