Title: Convivial Fandom: X-Men Characters: Alex Summers x Reader Word Count: 775 Warnings: None Notes: This is recompense for the angsty Alex fic that I posted last week. ♥
There are many moments in our lives that make us stop and think, I never would have pictured myself being here. One such moment snuck up on you, as you stood in your kitchen, preparing for your daughter’s birthday party. Children ran around in the backyard, laughing and playing together, as you and your husband completed the final preparations for the party.
“Hey, honey, can you help me bring the rest of the food out?”
Alex’s question snapped your attention away from your derailed train of thought. He was leaned forward on the kitchen island, a cheerful smile lighting up his features. The midday sunlight shone through the glass of the back doors, giving shine to his blond hair and beautiful eyes. You thought it often, but you were certain that he had never looked more beautiful than he did right then.
After helping Alex bring the remainder of the snacks outside, the only thing left was the cake. Five candles were stuck into the purple icing, and the finished product was brought outside, earning an expression of pure excitement from your daughter. She nearly knocked Alex over, trying to get to the cake as quickly as possible, but he was accustomed to her energetic nature, managing to set it on a table before her without a problem.
“Happy birthday” was sang, the candles were blown out, and Alex aided you in distributing the cake into eager hands. When it appeared that all of the attendees had been taken care of, you turned to Alex to see if he wanted help bringing the rest of the cake inside – only to be met with a face-full of cake.
The loud laughter that immediately followed would have brought a smile to your face in any other situation, but this time, it only brought on an immediate desperation for revenge. (In truth, you weren’t mad at all – but what kind of a relationship would this be if you didn’t retaliate?) You lunged at Alex, but as per usual, he was quicker than you, stopping you by grabbing your shoulders. However, you managed to wipe most of the cake off your face with your hands, proceeding to cover his face and shirt with it. His laughter only continued, as he raised his hands in a sign of truce, followed by an icing-coated kiss, which resulted in a small chorus of “ew” from the onlooking children.
Alex retreated inside to clean off and change his shirt, and you cleaned off the rest of the cake on your face with a few napkins, opting to wait until he returned to go inside and wash it all off. There were a few other parents present who could have kept an eye on things, but they were preoccupied with their own conversations. And being a first-time parent, you were always adamant about making sure that your daughter was well looked after.
While waiting for Alex to come back, you lingered by the back doors as you watched the kids, and you managed to catch a few words of what the other parents were saying. It was quickly clear that they were talking about you and Alex – which wasn’t a surprise, because they were often extraordinarily judgmental. You only maintained an acquaintanceship with them for the benefit of your daughter, so she could remain friends with their children. But what did surprise you was that they weren’t talking down on you and Alex – they were praising you.
“They’ve been married for – what, seven years? And they’re still so in love. I wish my husband and I were like that,” one woman commented, followed by a small, envious sigh.
“Yeah, me too. My husband and I haven’t looked at each other like that since our one-year anniversary – and we’ve been married for twelve years.”
Alex wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his chin on your shoulder distracted you from eavesdropping on their conversation.
“I’ve got the kids if you want to go in and wash up?” he offered, pressing a quick kiss to your temple. You nodded, and he let his arms fall to his sides as you turned to go inside.
You stopped in the doorway, and turned to look back at him, a tiny smile tugging at the corners of your lips. Alex returned the smile immediately, and raised a questioning brow at you. That smirk of his still sent warmth throughout your entire body, just as it had the first time you met him, and you were immensely grateful that that had not changed.
“I just… I love you,” you stated earnestly, and Alex’s grin widened.
