The newest members of the university tinfoil hat club don’t get along at all. Peter is a moon landing sceptic and Clara has significantly more strong opinions about the men in black than anyone else he’s ever met before. After a particularly heated meeting of the Conspiracy Theorists Association, a challenge is issued. Defend your preferred theory in an open debate to a panel of the other club members and the loser must submit to a forfeit of the club’s choosing.

The other members of the club clearly have a sense of humour, though not one shared by the two opposing participants. The forfeit is a date.

The set up worked better than any other member of the club could possibly have imagined. They scour libraries for books on government conspiracies and no one is quite sure how they manage to devote so much time and effort to discussing aliens while maintaining passing grades in all their classes. Two months later, Clara keeps a stack of history books and ghost stories under Peter’s dorm bed and Peter has a stash of Twinkies in a cupboard of Clara’s flat. Six months later, there’s a grand road trip in the works for the two; a comprehensive tour of all the most haunted places in the country. 

For them, it’s what’s considered romance.

The rest of the tinfoil hat club quietly adds ‘matchmaker’ to the special skills section of their resumes.
